Celia Applegate, associate professor of history, has been named director of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women\'s Studies at the University of Rochester.
Applegate joined the Rochester faculty in 1988 after teaching at Smith College in Massachusetts. Her specialties include 19th and 20th-century German history, particularly German nationalism and regionalism, and German popular attitudes toward music.
She had been dean of sophomores in 1991-92 and dean of freshmen in 1992-93.
The Susan B. Anthony Center, named to honor the 19th-century suffragist who led a campaign to admit women to the University, addresses issues important for understanding the role of women in society. More than 80 faculty associates and three visiting fellows in the Rockefeller Foundation program teach and do research through the Center.
The Center is sponsoring a series of seminars and outside speakers on \"Women, Nationalism, and the State.\" It holds a three-year, Rockefeller Foundation residency grant for feminism and visual culture. Center associates are also active in the planning of the upcoming national celebration of the 75th anniversary of women\'s suffrage.
