"Anchorsplash," an annual swimming competition hosted by Delta Gamma sorority to raise funds for the blind and visually impaired, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the pool of the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
The popular and humorous event pits teams of students and faculty members against each other in events such as sweatshirt relay races, freestyle relays, and synchronized swimming. In addition, "Anchorsplash" will incorporate a banner competition and a "Beautiful Eyes" contest. The contest requires teams to submit a can decorated with pictures of eyes, either of team members or famous people. The cans will be put on display, and event participants will vote for their favorite by putting pennies in the can they wish to win and dollars or silver coins in the cans of opposing teams. Pennies are worth more points, while dollars and silver coins take points away from the teams; "hurting" other teams with dollar or silver coin "votes" helps raise funds. The winning team will receive a pizza party.
An information table will be set up from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, through Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons on the River Campus. Teams will be able to register and pay the $25 dollar entry fee as well as vote on the "Beautiful Eyes" cans.
All proceeds raised from T-shirt sales, entry fees, and prize drawings will support Service for Sight, the national philanthropic project of Delta Gamma sorority. Funds raised by University of Rochester's Delta Gamma chapter have gone to the purchase of braille books as well as a seeing-eye dog. Admission to "Anchorsplash" is $2 at the door. For more information, contact Vanessa Mangan at (585) 274-2809.
