JoAnne Pedro-Carroll, associate professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Rochester and director of programs for Families in Transition at the Children's Institute, was honored recently for her innovative research with children and families.
The Association of Family, Court and Community Professionals, an international group of judges, lawyers, mediators, and mental health professionals working for constructive resolution to family conflict, presented her with the Stanley Cohen Distinguished Researcher Award this month at its convention in Chicago. Cohen was an AFCC founding member who was committed to excellence in research.
For more than 20 years, Pedro-Carroll has helped children deal with the strains of their parents' separation and divorce. In the 1980s, she developed the Children of Divorce Intervention Program, then implemented and evaluated it initially in five suburban schools. The program has since served thousands of children throughout the United States and worldwide.
In recent years, she has taken her preventive strategies to court in Monroe County where she has teamed up with family therapists, social workers, judges, lawyers, and mediators to create A.C.T. - For the Children, a program to teach separating parents how to reduce the stress of family changes on children and themselves.
Pedro-Carroll has testified on behalf of children and families at congressional briefings and at the White House, and was appointed earlier this year by Chief Justice Judith Kaye to the New York State Parent Education Advisory Board.
