Girls ages 8 to 12 can register for a two-week math, science and computer camp at the University of Rochester this summer. In its seventh year, camp sessions will be held July 7 to 18, and July 21 to Aug. 1. The cost is $300 for the all-day program.
"At camp, we promote interest in the sciences by offering the girls opportunities to do activities with real math and science, to see scientists in their laboratories, to meet role models and to learn about notable women scientists and mathematicians," says Edith Kort, camp director. Kort is a doctoral student at the University's Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development and a former professor of math and computer science at Nazareth College of Rochester.
The camp's objectives are to encourage girls to develop their scientific reasoning and basic data analysis skills. Participants also raise their curiosity and knowledge as they work on science experiments, solve problems in math and science, and interact with scientists. They use computer software in all stages of the program.
Campers spend their time on the University campus doing hands-on activities as well as taking field trips.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Campers are enrolled on a first come, first served basis.
