Fifth-grade girls from city schools will learn about careers in science during the second annual information day to be held at the University of Rochester River Campus Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Three dozen students will take part in lab activities, tour campus buildings, and eat lunch with college students.
Approximately 10 University students will act as guides and hosts throughout the day. They also will lead small discussion groups about college life and opportunities at the University.
University alumnae will assist with the day's events.
"This is the most successful and exciting program we conduct for the girls all year," said Laura Seligman, coordinator of the science day for the American Association of University Women.
The day is part of the "Women Helping Girls With Choices" project, a mentor program provided by the AAUW. This program provides workplace role models, mentors, and activities to girls in the fifth through 12th grades.
Mentors meet regularly with their students to try to broaden their understanding of the value of an education and to help them reach their academic and personal goals.
To volunteer to be a mentor, contact Kay Wallace at the Greater Rochester chapter of the AAUW at (716) 244-8890.
The science day is sponsored by the AAUW, the Susan B. Anthony University Center, and the Office of University & Community Affairs.
