Richard H. Heist has been appointed associate dean for graduate studies in the College at the University of Rochester. Formerly associate dean for graduate studies in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Heist's new appointment, effective immediately, expands his oversight responsibilities to include arts and science departments as well as engineering ones.
A member of the chemical engineering faculty, Heist has taught at the University since 1974, and has been awarded Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Awards three times by engineering undergraduates. He also shared a best paper award in 1993 from the American Society for Engineering Education. He is a reviewer for more than 10 professional journals and publishers, as well as for the National Science Foundation and Environmental Protection Agency.
His major research interests are in aerosols, gas-to- particle conversion, ultrafine particles and nucleation. Heist holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Catawba College and a doctorate in chemistry from Purdue University.
"We are most fortunate to have Dean Heist's effective leadership and counsel as we make decisions about the course that graduate studies will take in the College," said Richard Aslin, vice provost and dean of the College.
