Mary Shannon Johnstone, a graduate student in Rochester Institute of Technology's Fine Arts Photography program, explores the themes of loss, longing, and hope in "By Now You Know," an exhibition at the Hartnett Gallery on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The presentation will run from Thursday, April 19, through Thursday, May 17.
Johnstone's thesis for her master's degree in fine arts, the exhibit includes both photography and video installation. "'By Now You Know' refers to an idea that I exist in two selves, one that is old and wise, and one that is young and impressionable," Johnstone says of her exhibit. After surviving a near-death experience in a swimming pool, she believes that she divided herself into two parts to manage the stress. The exhibit "means I should not be naïve anymore. For a long time, I lied to myself by not admitting what I already knew," she says. "'By Now You Know' indicates hope in transcendence. I am now above the water looking in."
Johnstone, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., received her bachelor's degree in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1996. Since then, she has exhibited and sold work internationally as part of ArtLink@Sotheby's. Johnstone's work has also been featured by Eastman Kodak as part of the "Future Photographers Testing the Future of Photography" series.
Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. There will be an opening reception for the exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Johnstone will speak about her work that night at 5:30 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. For more information, call (585) 275-4188.
