Fredrick C. Harris, assistant professor in political science at the University of Rochester, has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to begin work on a comparative study of racial inequality and politics in three democracies. Harris also an associate of the Frederick Douglass Institute, will study black political mobilization in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.
His grant will fund travel to England and South Africa, where he will determine what archival and research materials exist that will be helpful in the study. He also will establish contacts with scholars in those countries.
Once this groundwork is laid, Harris intends to use survey data, interviews, and other materials to develop a broader understanding of how liberal democracies and their citizens respond to racial conflict and inequalities, and how racially dominated groups organize themselves politically to resist social and economic discrimination.
