Roxanne Kamayani Gupta, scholar of religious studies and South Asian anthropology and performer of Indian classical dance, will present her dramatic dance program, Adi Shakti: Dawn of the First Goddess, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester River Campus.
Gupta, an internationally renowned performer, has studied Indian classical dance for the past 27 years. She trained extensively under the direction of Indian masters and has performed in India, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and the United States. Her new book, A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance: The Yogini's Mirror, unites the yoga and classical dance traditions of India and combines exercise instruction and artistic photography with the author's narrative of her experiences with Indian culture. Gupta is currently assistant professor of religious studies at Albright College in Reading, Pa.
In her presentation, Gupta uses monologue, verse, storytelling, yoga, dance, and visual imagery to depict the evolution of Shakti, the primordial feminine energy, into Durga, the all-powerful goddess of the battleground.
Previously, Gupta delivered a four-part lecture series on art and spirituality and a talk on tantric themes in Indian art and dance at the Memorial Art Gallery. Her upcoming appearance is co-sponsored by the Department of Religion and Classics, the Interfaith Chapel, the Dance Program, the Office of the Dean of Students, and ADITI, the Association for the Development of Interest in the Indian Sub-Continent.
Admission to the event is $5 for the general public and $3 for students with student ID. Tickets will be sold at the door.
Gupta will also present a workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in the dance studio in Spurrier Gymnasium on River Campus. The workshop is free and open to the public but, due to limited space, registrations for the workshop should be made at (585) 274-2663.
