TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 6 p.m. Friday, April 7, room 2110D of Dewey Hall on the University of Rochester's River Campus
ADMISSION: Free and open to the public
Steven Gregory, associate professor of anthropology and Africana Studies at New York University, will discuss the rhetoric of globalization and how it conflicts with community-based struggles at 6 p.m. Friday, April 7, in room 2110D of Dewey Hall on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
As keynote speaker for that day's conference on "Culture and Community: Anthropology and the Public Interest," Gregory will discuss the ways in which the rhetoric of economic globalization is used by public officials and academics to question legitimate community-based struggles over the urban environment. Using Corona, Queens, as a case study, Gregory argues that these struggles continue to play a critical role in shaping municipal as well as regional economic and land use policies.
The conference, sponsored by the Department of Anthropology and the Rochester Center for Ethnographic Studies, will focus on undergraduates doing original field research in the city of Rochester. Sessions, which are open to the public, begin at 1:30 p.m. in room 209 in the Computer Studies Building.
The goal of the center is to link the intellectual resources of the University to the needs and current realities of nearby communities. Mark Rogers, assistant professor of anthropology, directs the center, which is based in Lattimore Hall on the River Campus.
