A 2001 documentary capturing the life of diamond mining off the coast of Namibia will be shown at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in room 302 of Morey Hall on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. It is free and open to the public.
On a ship where diamond miners search for gems from the ocean floor, Israeli directors Adi Barash and Ruth Shatz record an international cast of characters living and working on a rusted old ship. In Diamonds and Rust, South Africans, Cubans, Namibians, and others deal with the tensions and pain of their circumstances.
The film team gained permission from diamond exporter De Beers to piece together what one reviewer called “a stark, vérité look at 90 long days.” Diamonds and Rust has been shown at several international film festivals and has earned prizes.
The Africa Video and Film Series is sponsored by the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies at the University of Rochester. For more information, contact the Frederick Douglass Institute at (585) 275-7235.
