A lecture/demonstration on the key features of The William Blake Archive Web site will be presented by Professor of English Morris Eaves at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the Hyam Plutzik Library of Contemporary Writing on the second floor of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
The site, which was created in 1996, brings together the text and illustrations of famed 18th-century poet and painter William Blake. Drawing on library and museum resources from around the world, the archive contains copies of all of Blake's 19 illustrated books as well as his major works in other artistic media. Fully searchable by text and images, the site blends editions, catalogs, databases, and other scholarly tools into an invaluable archive.
Titled "William Blake and the Digital Age," the demonstration will be followed by a discussion. Eaves, co-editor of the site, will address the archive's history, reasons for its creation, and the future of libraries in the digital age. The first electronic publication to receive the Modern Language Association Prize for a Distinguished Scholarly Edition, the site is considered by many to be on the cutting edge of online scholarly editions.
The event is sponsored by River Campus Libraries and is part of this year's Meliora Weekend, the University's annual celebration of homecoming, alumni reunions, and parents' weekend. For more information, contact (585) 275-4461.
