A photograph of a tranquil port in Belize taken by Paul Brady, Class of 2004, was selected for the cover of the current issue of Abroad View Magazine. Brady’s 2003 photo of the new port of Caye Caulker can be seen online at www.abroadviewmagazine.com/.
Abroad View is produced by a consortium of American colleges and universities in cooperation with Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. It promotes cross-cultural understanding, foreign language acquisition, and global awareness.
As a sophomore, Brady created his own interdisciplinary concentration in Italian Studies. During his sophomore and junior years, he participated in two College-sponsored study abroad programs in Italy. He spent a month in the summer of 2002 studying Italian language in Padua, and Spring 2003 in Arezzo on the semester-long Tuscan and Renaissance studies program.
While a high school student in Jefferson City, Mo., Brady first traveled overseas, visiting Rome and Pompeii with his Latin class. This sparked a passion for travel and made him realize that “international travel is fun, easy, and accessible.” “Paul came back and was an energetic student peer advisor during his senior year,” says Jacqueline Levine, assistant dean and director of study abroad. “In addition to sharing his own experiences as a student and traveler, he coordinated the study abroad writing contest in the fall, and the photo exhibit in the spring.”
To date, he’s been back to Italy several times, and also has visited Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Belize, Mexico, and Nicaragua. In September, he entered Syracuse University’s graduate program at the Newhouse School, where he is preparing for an international career in journalism.
