The works of eight University of Rochester undergraduate students who deal with issues of gender and identity in their art are now on display in the Gallery at the Art & Music Library on the University's River Campus.
Pieces by students Justin John, Jian Lin Lang, Huijie Li, Katie McManus, Katie Piekarz, Summer Romasco, Rebecca Wolfson, and Shirley Zimmer were chosen by a panel of judges from the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies (SBAI), the Department of Art and Art History, and outside juror Sarah E. Webb, a nationally exhibited artist and author of Singular Women: Writing the Artist. The exhibit, "(En)Gendered: Identity, Gender, and Art," is free and open through Friday, March 25.
"(En)Gendered highlights the work of eight undergraduates, which considers how images reinforce traditional representations of gender, as well as proffer new readings," said Webb.
The SBAI Purchase Prize was won by McManus for a painting of a nude figure on plywood with twine called "Untitled." Romasco and Wolfson each received an SBAI Jurors' Choice Prize. Romasco's large canvas titled "Gone" shows a close-up of a distinctive face and palm of a hand. Wolfson's work titled "My life as a 6th-Grade Wallflower" is painted on a long, narrow canvas showing a partial figure behind the door of a bathroom stall.
The gallery is located on the ground floor of Rush Rhees Library. Hours for the exhibit are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact the Susan B. Anthony Institute at (585) 275-8318.
