Several events and activities are planned on the University of Rochester’s River Campus to raise funds for tsunami relief and reconstruction efforts.
Members of the University community and the general public will come together for the Tsunami Reconstruction Music Fest, an all-acoustic concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in Strong Auditorium. The event features local musicians Marvin Stillman, Maria Gillard, Connie Deming, and the Monroe County Bluegrass Ramblers. Campus student groups scheduled to participate in the show include Vocal Point, Yellowjackets, Midnight Ramblers, After Hours, and More Cowbell.
Admission to the music fest is $5, and tickets are available at the Common Market in Wilson Commons. The event is sponsored by the University of Rochester Arboretum Committee with the co-operation of the UR Tsunami Relief Committee, Grassroots, and the Wilson Commons Student Activities Office.
A Tsunami Benefit Reception for the University community will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the May Room in Wilson Commons. The event features music provided by the River Campus Jazz Ensemble and a group of faculty members from the Eastman School of Music and from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. The faculty group includes University Vice President Paul Burgett; Professors of Theory David Headlam and Matthew Brown from Eastman; Bob Sneider, instructor of jazz guitar in the collegiate and community education divisions at Eastman; Mark Bocko, chair and professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College; and Dan Beaumont, associate professor of Arabic language and literature in the College. The group has performed blues for students at Eastman and on the River Campus and as part of the Neilly Series.
Refreshments for the tsunami benefit reception are being donated by Dining Services. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for faculty and staff, and are available in advance at the Common Market.
In addition, the UR Tsunami Relief Committee will be selling green tsunami relief bracelets for $2 each, with proceeds earmarked for the reconstruction efforts of UNICEF. Bracelets will be available at the Common Market.
