Students representing various faith communities and student groups at the University of Rochester will be making and delivering 3,000 sandwiches to local food kitchens and community centers April 6 and 7 as part of their Faiths in Action initiative.
For two days, students will prepare peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches for about 18 local sites, including the House of Mercy, St. Joseph’s House, Open Door Mission, and Salvation Army. Food donations for the project, dubbed PB & Jam 2005, are provided by Genesee Valley Foodlink and Wegmans.
Originally a program sponsored by Jewish Hillel, PB & Jam is being joined by members of the Buddhist, Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Hindu faiths, and the Community Service Network. In addition, groups of fraternities and sororities as well as other clubs will take turns making and delivering sandwiches.
The students will create an assembly line for sandwich-making from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, and Thursday, April 7, in the Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons on the University’s River Campus.
