The Gallery at the Art & Music Library is showing off the artistic skill and beauty of works by River Campus Library staff in the current show called "Staff Infection" at the University of Rochester. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
"It's clear from the works that art is an important aspect in the lives of many on the library staff," says Stephanie Frontz, director of the Art & Music Library in Rush Rhees Library. "I guess you could say they are 'infected' with the need to do art." Among the items are oil paintings, pen and ink sketches, and needlecrafts.
Frontz decided to revive the idea of a group show by library staff and asked Heather Layton, lecturer in art and studio art coordinator, and Marni Shindelman, assistant professor of art, to select the pieces. Some of the staff are professional artists, but most are making their debut. The show continues through Friday, Sept. 2, in Rush Rhees Library on the University’s River Campus.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for me and others working here,” says Leah Hamilton, a laboratory technician in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. “You see your co-workers every day without realizing that they may be artists, too. I’m hoping the exhibit will bring us all closer.” An opening reception with the artists will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, in the gallery.
