Michael Palmer, poet and translator, will read from his works as part of The Plutzik Reading Series at the University of Rochester at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus.
The Plutzik Series is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious literary reading programs and was established to honor the work of Hyam Plutzik, a distinguished poet and Deane Professor of Poetry and Rhetoric at the University. Events are free and open to the public. Also featured in this fall's schedule, which opens with author Beverly Donofrio on Sept. 19, will be novelist Madison Smartt Bell on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Palmer is the author of many poetry books, including Blake's Newton, First Figure, and The Promises of Glass. His work has also been published in numerous literary magazines, such as Boundary 2, Berkeley Poetry Review, Sulfur, Conjunctions, New American Writing, Chicago Review, Fulcrum and O-blek.
Palmer is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund Writers Award, and the 2001 Shelley Memorial Prize.
From 1999 to 2004, Palmer served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. For the past two years, Palmer has been a Visiting Professor in the School on English at the University of Cardiff. Currently, he is residing in San Francisco.
The Plutzik Series has featured more than 175 noted writers, including Pulitzer Prize winners Anthony Hecht, Elizabeth Bishop, and Galway Kinnell. The Plutzik Series is administered by the Department of English. For more information, call (585) 275-4092.
