Forty college teams from New York, the Northeast and into Canada will compete Sunday, Oct. 9, in the 2005 Stonehurst Capital Invitational Regatta on the Genesee River. A major date on the fall crew racing calendar and one of dozens of free activities during Rochester's River Romance Weekend, the regatta attracts more than 900 athletes for a festive event open to the community.
Now in its 17th year, the regatta is co-hosted by the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester Business Alliance, and Genesee Waterways Center. Races begin at 9 a.m. with viewing areas all along the east side of the river, just south of the Elmwood Avenue bridge. At 11:30 a.m., the collegiate teams take a break and high school rowing teams from the Rochester and Buffalo areas will race. Afternoon races are scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. with winners given medals and cups.
For 10 years, the regatta has been sponsored by Stonehurst Capital, a Rochester investment firm. Other sponsors include Deloitte & Touche LLP, Harvard & Ivy League Alliance, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), LeChase Construction Services LLC, Nixon Peabody LLP, and The Pike Company Inc. Sponsor tents line the main walkway through Genesee Valley Park and there are free musical performances, jugglers and other activities for children. Food can be purchased.
Whether you're curious or already knowledgeable about crew, the regatta shows off the Genesee as a picturesque venue. The morning races are head races to the finish line near the Interfaith Chapel on the University of Rochester's River Campus; the afternoon races are sprint races when teams compete based on their performance in the morning. Crew teams from the University of Rochester, which is celebrating Rochester Crew's 25th year, and RIT will compete in a field that includes Harvard, Yale, Williams, Brown, SUNY Binghamton, Skidmore, Western Ontario, and other universities.
Parking is available free on University of Rochester lots with Park Lot closest to the racing. Handicapped parking is available in Trustee Lot with a shuttle running continuously to Genesee Valley Park.
