A variety of concerts, including the premiere of a work for the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary, will highlight the University's Meliora Weekend Friday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 23. The concerts are sponsored by the Department of Music in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering.
Performances kick off with a concert by the University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra at 4 p.m. Friday in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus featuring Carl Marie von Weber's "Concertino for Clarinet." The ensemble is conducted by David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities. This program will also feature Kenneth Grant, associate professor of clarinet at the Eastman School of Music and principal clarinetist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
The University of Rochester Glee Clubs, conducted by Assistant Professor of Music L. Brett Scott, will celebrate the return of the men's and women's glee club tradition on campus with a concert and reception at 8 p.m. Friday in the Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus.
The second day of Meliora Weekend, Saturday, Oct. 22, will feature two events. William Tiberio, musical director in the Fairport High School music program and a recipient of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Music Educator Award, will conduct the University of Rochester Wind Symphony at 3:15 p.m. in Strong Auditorium.
Later that day, at 8 p.m. in Strong Auditorium, the University of Rochester Glee Clubs along with the Chamber Singers will join the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra in an anniversary concert program that includes Saint Saens' "Bacchanale" from Samson and Dalila, Manuel de Falla's "The Three-Cornered Hat," and Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances" from Prince Igor with the choirs. The highlight will be the world premiere of Eastman School of Music Professor of Composition David Liptak's Three Dances for Orchestra, a 20-minute piece consisting of three sections—"Gathering Dance," "Moon Dance," and "Shadow Dance" —commissioned for the 50th anniversary. Each section explores themes of the dance in different settings.
The final day of Meliora Weekend, Sunday, Oct. 23, will feature the Gospel Choir, directed by Rev. Alvin Parris III. The performance will begin at 3 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel.
Meliora Weekend is an annual celebration for students, friends, family, and alumni. For more information about the concerts, contact the Department of Music at (585) 275-2828.
