Ha Jin, acclaimed and award-winning novelist and poet, will speak at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Hubbell Auditorium of Hutchison Hall on the University of Rochester's River Campus. His talk on his latest book, War Trash, is part of the yearlong Neilly Series, and is free and open to the public.
Born in Liaoning, China, in 1956, Jin pursued English studies at Heilongjiang University in China where he earned a bachelor's degree. He then received a master's degree at Shandong University in China, and got his doctoral degree at Brandeis University.
Jin sets many of his stories and novels in China, in the fictional Muji City. One of his earlier works, Waiting, won the National Book Award and the 1999 PEN/Faulkner Award. Besides novels, Jin publishes short stories and many have appeared in The Best American Short Stories anthologies.
This year, Jin won his second PEN/Faulkner Award for War Trash, the story of a man forced to fight in the Chinese army during the Korean War. He also was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is currently professor of English at Boston University. Jin will be introduced by Greta Niu, assistant professor of English at the University of Rochester.
His lecture is timed to coincide with Meliora Weekend, the annual celebration for alumni, parents, students, and the public on the River Campus. Neilly Series events are supported by a major gift from University alumnus Andrew H. Neilly and his wife, Janet Dayton Neilly. The lectures are produced by River Campus Libraries.
