An electrical engineering student at the University of Rochester has been named to a USA TODAY "1995 All-USA College Academic Team."
William Oliver, a senior from Penn Yan, NY who has published research that explores the successes of Japanese superconductivity research programs, was named to the newspaper's Third Team. Oliver's paper, written in Japanese, discussed the way that the Japanese government fostered links between academic research and industrial development in a field like superconductivity. Each of USA TODAY's three teams is composed of 20 students chosen for their academic brilliance, energetic leadership, and desire to use their talents to help others.
"We honor them as symbols, to remind the country that college students have talents beyond those publicized on the sports pages," said USA TODAY president Tom Curley.
"Will Oliver has been a very impressive student," said Thomas Jones, professor of electrical engineering. "He has so many interests and abilities that he's really extraordinary."
Winners were selected in a three-step process from 1,398 students nominated by their colleges.
