The Tiernan Project and Sigma Beta Rho fraternity are hosting a community Halloween celebration today for more than 100 youth from the city of Rochester.
Dressed in their costumes, they will arrive on the University of Rochester's River Campus for the Scare Fair in Rush Rhees Library at 4:30 p.m. About 80 student volunteers from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering will join the young people, give them tours of the library, provide food and games at Douglass Dining Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and finally take them to Susan B. Anthony Halls for trick-or-treating from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
"This exciting collaboration between university organizations and community organizations provides not only a safe environment for youth to go trick-or-treating but an introduction to the campus," said Mubarek Said, a Take Five Scholar and member of Sigma Beta Rho. "We hope this creates a chain reaction influencing the youth to participate in other campus activities as well as to promote college students to be engaged with the Rochester area." The city students participate in several different support and after-school programs near the River Campus.
Co-sponsors of today's events include the 2006 Class Council, 2007 Class Council, Burton-Lovejoy Hall Council, Sue B Hall Council, Towers Hall Council, the Community Service Network, and the Rochester Center for Community Leadership.
