The Viennese Ball, one of the University of Rochester's most popular annual events, will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Wilson Commons on the University's River Campus. Open to the public, the ball is sponsored by the University Chamber Orchestra and the University Chamber Singers, who perform while guests enjoy the spirit of an evening in "old Vienna."
This year, the Department of Music is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Viennese Ball. Since the first ball in 1985, the event has become a favorite tradition for many at the University. Students, faculty, and community members join to celebrate the formal black-tie event, with couples dancing waltzes and polkas on several floors inside Wilson Commons, decorated and transformed to recreate the atmosphere of a festive night in the Viennese capital.
The chamber orchestra and chamber singers will perform well-known pieces from Johann Strauss as well as other favorite musical works. Light refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening. Proceeds from the ball benefit the chamber singers and the chamber orchestra.
The University Chamber Orchestra is directed by David Harman, professor of music in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. The orchestra performs free concerts on the River Campus and has traveled to perform in Italy, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman Island. The chamber singers choir, directed by Brett Scott, assistant professor of music, also performs on the River Campus and collaborates with other choral groups and musical ensembles.
Tickets to the Viennese Ball are $10 in advance, available at the Common Market in Wilson Commons. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $13. For more information, contact the Department of Music, (585) 275-2828.
