Joanna Mishtal, doctoral candidate in cultural anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will discuss reproductive health rights in Poland and the influence of the Catholic Church at noon Monday, Dec. 5, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus. The lecture is sponsored by the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, the Department of Anthropology, and the Center for Global Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Mishtal's seminar, titled "Making Sense of Body Politics: Reproduction, Sexuality, and Women's Health in Contemporary Poland," will focus on the changes in reproductive health care since the fall of the socialist state. Mishtal will argue that the government has adopted Catholic discourse in its policies, citing the ban on abortion and restrictions on contraception as evidence.
An instructor at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver and in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Mishtal's research interests are in gender and sexuality, democratization, political economy, power, and class. She received her master's degree in anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2000.
Lunch will be provided, but reservations are requested by calling x5-9898 by Thursday, Dec. 1.
