August 13, 1997
Auditions for membership in the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra will be held in Strong Auditorium on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 2 and 3.
Membership is open to students and other experienced musicians from throughout Greater Rochester. Musicians should call the music program office at 275-2828 to schedule an audition. Each auditioning musician will be asked to present two to three minutes of solo material showcasing tone and technique, as well as to sight read excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire.
The symphony is celebrating its 42nd season this year under the direction of David Harman. A community-student orchestra of nearly 100 musicians, URSO will present four formal concerts that will include Brahms' Symphony No. 1, Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, and Ravel's Rhapsodie espangole. In addition, Eastman School of Music faculty member Tony Caramia will be the featured soloist in Gershwin's Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra.
The URSO rehearses each Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus.
