Designed to highlight exceptional student work accomplished under the supervision of faculty advisors, the second annual Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) will be held Thursday, April 26, and Friday, April 27, on the University of Rochester River Campus. URC 2001 will include a diverse exposition of undergraduate research and creativity, faculty lecturers, and the Students' Association Undergraduate Professor of the Year Awards.
The event opens at 5 p.m. Thursday in the May Room of Wilson Commons with the presentation of the Undergraduate Professor of the Year Awards. Students nominate professors for this honor, and awards are presented in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Vice President and University Dean of Students Paul Burgett will emcee the ceremony. Theodore Brown, chair of the history department, has been chosen as the guest lecturer, and a performance by Midnight Ramblers will follow his speech.
Friday afternoon, in the May Room from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., student-produced posters and PowerPoint presentations as well as student artwork will be displayed. Exhibitions include photography, a computer programming demonstration, chemistry research, psychology experiments, and statistic analysis.
University departments and well-known university research programs, including the art department's studio art projects by senior students, the Modern Languages and Cultures Department, and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, will hold presentations beginning at 2 p.m. Friday. Students in the McNair Program will present their research in 207 Schlegel Hall. Other sessions will be taking place in various locations in Meliora Hall.
URC, jointly sponsored by the College and Students' Association Senate, grew from the success of the National Conference on Undergraduate Research held on River Campus during the spring of 1999. The steering committee for URC 2001 includes Thomas Krugh, professor of chemistry; Joanne Wu '02, projects committee chairwoman for the Student Association Senate; and Rob Rouzer, director of student activities. Events are free and open to the public.
More information on the sessions is available on the Web at http://www.urc.rochester.edu/URC.html.
