Michal Galas, visiting professor in the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies at the University of Rochester, will discuss the life of Rabbi Marcus Jastrow, a prominent figure in the progressive Jewish communities of Warsaw, Poland, and Philadelphia. Jastrow served as rabbi of Rodeph Shalom, the Hebrew German congregation in Philadelphia, and became a leading 19th-century figure in American Judaism, and significantly impacted the development of Jewish studies in the United States. The talk is titled "Rabbi Marcus Jastrow (1829-1903): Polish Patriot and Reformer of American Judaism."
Galas, an historian of modern Judaism and Jewish religious heritage in Poland, is the author of many studies dedicated to Jewish mystical and messianic movements. He is the recipient of several prestigious fellowships, and is a lecturer in the Department of Jewish Studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. His talk is co-sponsored by the Center for Judaic Studies and the Office of the Dean of the College.
