Dr. Ralph A. Manchester has been named director of the University Health Service for the University of Rochester. He succeeds Dr. Clifford Reifler, who retired this year.
As head of the health service, Manchester will oversee a staff of 50 who deliver health services to members of the University community.
The administrative structure of University Health Service recently has been reorganized. Schwartz, who oversees mental health services, reports directly to Paul Burgett, vice president and chief officer for student affairs. Dr. Ralph Manchester also will report directly to Burgett.
Manchester has been medical chief of the health service since 1986. He joined the health service in 1983 as a staff physician. He also is an associate professor of medicine in the Geriatrics and General Medicine Unit at the University's Medical Center.
He is a board member of the American College Health Association and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. From 1990-92, he was president of the New York State College Health Association.
Manchester earned his bachelor's degree from Tufts University in 1975, graduating magna cum laude, and earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont in 1979. When serving his internship and residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1982, he was named outstanding resident teacher.
