The University of Rochester Gospel Choir will mark three decades of performance with a 30th anniversary celebration concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 1, in the University of Rochester River Road Auditorium, 300 East River Rd.
"GospelFest 2006!" will also feature the University of Rochester Alumni Gospel Choir; Divine Nature, a nationally renowned male quartet; The Voices of New Life, the adult choir of New Life Fellowship; and In His presence, a gospel trio of University of Rochester alumnae.
The University of Rochester Gospel Choir has been directed since its inception by Rev. Alvin Parris III, who founded the ensemble in 1976 under the aegis of Campus Ministries. The choir now performs as an ensemble of the music department in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Parris received his bachelor's degree in music education from the University's Eastman School of Music in 1973.
In addition to regular concerts presented on the University campus, the University of Rochester Gospel Choir has performed locally in Rochester city schools and churches, and traveled outside the area to Cornell University, SUNY Binghamton, and Buffalo State College. The choir also has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the "Young Audiences" program.
Proceeds from "GospelFest 2006!" will benefit the Children's Poverty program administered by the Greater Rochester Council of Churches. Suggested donation is $3 for students with ID and $5 for others. The concert is co-sponsored by the Greater Rochester Council of Churches, the Department of Music, and Wilson Commons Student Activities. For more information, contact (585) 275-2828.
