Students representing various faith communities and student groups at the University of Rochester will be making and delivering 2,000 sandwiches to shelters, soup kitchens, and community centers on Thursday, March 30, as part of their Faiths in Action initiative.
Students will prepare peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches for about 18 local sites, including the House of Mercy, St. Joseph's House, Open Door Mission, and Salvation Army. Food donations for the project, dubbed PB & Jam 2006, are provided by Genesee Valley Foodlink and Wegmans.
Originally a program sponsored by Jewish Hillel, PB & Jam is being joined by members of the Buddhist, Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Hindu faiths, and the Community Service Network. In addition, fraternity and sorority members and campus clubs will take turns making and delivering sandwiches.
The students will create an assembly line for sandwich-making from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 30 in the Hirst Lounge of Wilson Commons on the University's River Campus.
