University of Rochester student Michael S. Newmark has been named a 2006-2007 Fulbright Scholar to study in Krakow, Poland, where he will be affiliated with the Institute of History at The Jagiellonian University. Newmark will examine the role of the szlachta, or Polish gentry class, in the creation of the Polish intelligentsia from the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. Upon returning to the United States, Newmark plans to pursue a doctorate in European and Polish history and teach.
Newmark, who will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in psychology, is currently a Take Five scholar, using the University's tuition-free fifth year program to study German language and culture. He spent the 2004 spring semester studying abroad at the Centre for European Studies Program of The Jagiellonian University and the summer of 2005 at the School for Polish Language and Culture in Krakow, made possible by a scholarship from the University's Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies.
A resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., Newmark is a graduate of Fort Hamilton High School. At the University of Rochester, he has been an active member of the student organization UR Polish and Central European Club and writes for the Campus Times, the student newspaper. Newmark is also a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honors society.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and designed to promote mutual understanding and peace between the United States and other nations through educational and cultural exchange, the Fulbright Program offers opportunities for career-launching study, teaching, and research abroad. Scholars design their own programs and arrange institutional affiliations in the host countries. The grants cover expenses such as travel and health insurance and also provide a monthly stipend.
