David E. Lewis has been named Vice Provost and Chief Information Officer, a cabinet-level position, at the University of Rochester effective May 1. Lewis had been in charge of Information Technology Services (ITS) as interim CIO since July 2005.
"Information technology is a critical strategic resource for the University," said Joel Seligman, University president. "Dave has already displayed remarkable skill in beginning a conversation among the schools and programs as to how best to move forward and what our priorities in IT should be."
"I am delighted to appoint Dave Lewis as the permanent Vice Provost and CIO, and look forward to working with him with great enthusiasm," said Charles E. Phelps, University provost. "There was an extraordinary pool of candidates, and in this outstanding set of academic IT leaders, Dave Lewis—our very own—stood out as the best. He's a natural consensus builder, highly skilled both in the technology and business sides of the IT enterprise, and an avidly loyal member of the University community."
Lewis reports to the provost and provides leadership for the extensive and diverse IT initiatives required to support a leading national research university.
"It's a very exciting time to be part of the University community, and I am extremely pleased to be formally joining the senior leadership team," stated Lewis. "I am grateful for the support I received from University colleagues throughout the process. The combination of an exciting new administration led by President Seligman, the opportunity to continue to work directly for Provost Phelps, great relationships and unprecedented collaborative opportunities across the University community, and a talented IT organization that is open to change—that makes this a very attractive position."
Lewis joined the University of Rochester in 1997 after more than 10 years at the University of Michigan, where he served in a variety of IT leadership roles. He has an extensive background leading information technology organizations, including developing and integrating complex IT infrastructures into higher education and health care environments. He is experienced in collaborating with University faculty on projects relating to research, and teaching and learning initiatives that require technology support.
As a University administrator, Lewis has been involved and at the leading edge of developing sustainable cost recovery models for funding information technology infrastructure.
Lewis is active in many national and regional initiatives, including Educause, NYSERNet, Internet2, and ACUTA. He received both his bachelor's degree in organizational development and his master's degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University.
He was associate chief information officer and director of networking and communications services when he was appointed interim CIO.
Note to editors: Mr. Lewis and his family reside in Pittsford.
