Zora Mihailovich, artist-in-residence in the University of Rochester's music department in the College, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music. The recital is free and open to the public.
Born in Belgrade, Mihailovich debuted with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 16, and at the age of 17 became the youngest person ever to graduate from the Academy of Music in Belgrade. She completed her studies at the Academia di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome with Carlo Zecchi, one of the world's foremost pianists.
Since moving to the United States in 1989, Mihailovich has been a guest artist at the University of Southern California School of Music and the California Institute of Arts. She has also taught at the University of Arizona's School of Music in Tucson, California State University at Fullerton, and the Uppsala School of Music in Sweden. Previously, she was a professor of piano at the University of Belgrade for 15 years.
Mihailovich has performed in a number of major venues, including London's Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall, and the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels. She has collaborated with singers Giuseppe di Stefano, Placido Domingo, Nicolai Gedda, and Anna Moffo, and has made numerous recordings for North American and European recording companies on the Centaur, PGP-RCT, Virtuoso, and Virtuoso Classics labels.
Mihailovich has earned praise in reviews of her performances and recordings. The Times of London wrote of her "lyrical sweetness, intimately eloquent phrasing, climaxes of startling intensity and many flashes of virtuosity," while the Het Laatste Nieuws of Amsterdam praised her "brilliant superb pianistic technique . . . poetic sensitivity," and the Los Angeles Daily News described her as "a charismatic performer."
The May 17 recital will feature Johannes Brahms's Sonata Op. 5, nocturnes and polonaise by Chopin, and R. Pick Mangiagalli's Deux Lunaire, and will be preceded by a talk on the Brahms sonata from Dr. Robert Bakos, associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry, at 6:45 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall.
As artist-in-residence in the College music department, Mihailovich presents a recital each semester; appears as a soloist with various ensembles; holds workshops and master classes for pianists; coaches chamber music, including piano; and is a guest lecturer in academic courses.
