Rochester-area writers who have produced works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young people's literature, and playwriting in 2005 are encouraged to submit entries for the second annual Andrew Eiseman Writers Award.
The prize, which is supported by the River Campus Libraries at the University of Rochester and 1979 alumnus Andrew Eiseman, was created to foster bonds between the Rochester literary community and the University of Rochester, and to raise awareness of the University and its libraries as community resources.
Entries for the second annual award must be submitted by Nov. 1, 2006, for full-length books in the four categories and for plays published during the 2005 calendar year; in the case of playwriting, the work must have been presented by a professional group during that same period, but may have been published earlier. Collections of short stories or poetry must be by one author.
Eligible writers must live within a 50-mile radius of Rochester. The books cannot be self-published or e-books. A $1,000 prize will be awarded in each category where the judges have selected a winner.
This year's judges are: Marge Betley, literary manager/resident dramaturg at Geva Theatre; Richard Ben Cramer, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of such books as Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life and What it Takes: The Way to the White House; Andrew Eiseman; Grant Holcomb, director of the Memorial Art Gallery; Lynda Garner Goldstein, alumna and former Monroe County legislator; Jerold Ramsey, professor emeritus of English at the University of Rochester; Dr. Seymour I. Schwartz, Distinguished Alumni Professor of Surgery; and Annette Weld, alumna and Libraries Advisory Council member.
Submissions should be sent to: Andrea Weinstein, Room 236, Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627. Submissions accompanied by return postage will be sent to the authors after the judging is complete. Queries can be directed to aweinstein@library.rochester.edu or (585) 273-1341. The awards will be announced in March 2007 and presented at a ceremony in May 2007.
A Denver, Colo., native, Eiseman graduated from University of Rochester with a degree in Performing Arts Management and went on to careers in the performing arts field as well as in the management of telecom and cable TV companies. He has served on the boards of charities, including the 10th Mountain Trail Association in Aspen, and the Center for American Places of Santa Fe.
