"You must be the change you want to see in the world."
These words of Mahatma Gandhi have inspired people all over the world to embrace change and make a difference in their community. They also inspired a national day of service called "Be the Change Day."
The annual event, organized nationally by the South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow (SAALT) since 1997, promotes partnerships with local and national organizations for the benefit of the community. Now in 2006 the event has spread to more than 200 universities, including the University of Rochester.
Here in Rochester, Gandhi's mission continues as more than 300 University and elementary students devote their time and service on Saturday, Sept. 30, to a nearby city neighborhood. This day of service is just one way University students hope to strengthen their relationship with the south west city neighborhood and benefit members of the community.
To kick off the event, community leader and Rochester City Councilman Dana Miller will address the students at 12:30 p.m. in Wilson Commons on the University's River Campus.
Then at 1 p.m., University students and community members will head over to a four-block stretch on Reynolds Street and help clean up the area.
The day of service is organized locally by the Association of the Development of Interest in the Indian Subcontinent (ADITI), Charles Drew Pre-Health Society, the Community Service Network (CSN), and Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity Inc.
