Pierce, who is presenting the 2006 Mary Young Alumni Lecture, will examine how the historical study of energy systems provides useful insights into the development of future systems that are cleaner and more efficient. He notes that institutions could use existing commercially available technology to eliminate the use of fossil fuels, thus reducing emissions and lowering energy expenditures.
Pierce received his doctorate in history from the University of Rochester in 1993. He wrote his dissertation on the early history of cogeneration and district heating, which began in upstate New York in the late 19th century. He has written numerous articles on district heating and local heat supply planning, and is active in the International District Heating Association and the International Committee for the History of Technology. He also works closely with organizations such as Euroheat and Power in Brussels, the Combined Heat and Power Association in London, and the Danish Board of District Heating.
The Mary Young Lecture Series is sponsored by the Department of History and recognizes the work of Professor Emerita Mary Young, a specialist in Native American history who joined the faculty as a full professor in 1973 after an 18-year tenure at Ohio State University. She is widely regarded as an authority in her field.
