A blockbuster event showcasing world-renowned pianist Zora Mihailovich and the talents of more than 200 musicians will headline an array of concerts by various University of Rochester musical groups during the University's Meliora Weekend Friday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 8. The concerts are sponsored by the Department of Music in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering.
Mihailovich will be the soloist for Beethoven's beloved Choral Fantasy at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Alexander Palestra on the River Campus. She will be joined by the University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra and the men's and women's choruses and chamber singers. Milhailovich, who is the music department's artist-in-residence, has performed in recitals and as orchestral soloist in London's Wigmore Hall and Royal Festive Hall, New York's Carnegie Hall, and Brussels's Conservatoire Royal.
Also on the program are musical selections from the movie E.T. and the Broadway show Evita, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, a medley of Looney Tunes cartoons themes titled "What's Up at the Symphony," and themes from James Bond movies.
Other events that weekend include a joint concert by the University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra and the University of Rochester Wind Symphony at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus, and a performance by the University of Rochester Gospel Choir, directed by Rev. Alvin Parris III, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, in the Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus.
Meliora Weekend is an annual celebration for student, friends, family, and alumni. For more information about the concerts, contact the Department of Music at (585) 275-2828.
