TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, in Bausch and Lomb Park on Wilson Boulevard near the University of Rochester's River Campus
ADMISSION: Free
Hikers, bicyclists, and all lovers of the outdoors will be able to enjoy trail and tree tours and other activities as part of a National Trails Day celebration sponsored by the University of Rochester Arboretum and the Friends of the Genesee Riverway.
Events start at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 7, with a bicycle tour on the trails of Bausch and Lomb Park. All activities start from a scenic location overlooking the Genesee River near the railroad overpasses on Wilson Boulevard, about a half-mile south of McLean Street.
Activities continue at 10:30 a.m. with walking tours of the park trail and of the River Campus arboretum, where walkers will learn about the diversity of trees and shrubs on the University grounds.
Visitors should pack a picnic lunch and will be able to enjoy a concert by local singer/guitarists Paul Swiatek and Connie Deming from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The afternoon will feature more trail tours, all ending by 3 p.m.
All events are free and free parking will be available in the University's River Lot, located on Wilson Boulevard adjacent to the gathering.
In 2000, portions of the River Campus were designated an arboretum to preserve and promote the beauty of the campus and celebrate the horticultural heritage of the region. A map notes the 61 species of deciduous trees and 12 types of conifers growing along Wilson Boulevard, as well as the many other types of trees-some dating back to the 1920s-found on the River Campus. The map can be found online at http://www.facilities.rochester.edu/arboretum/photos/map.jpg.
For more information, contact Dan Schied, manager of horticulture and grounds at the University, at (585) 273-5815.
