In an effort to raise awareness of the benefits of buying local produce and sustainability initiatives at the University of Rochester, student and community groups have come together to host the first Sustainability Farmers Market on campus.
On Friday, Oct. 20, students, faculty and staff, and the Rochester community don't have to go far to get organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables, such as apples, greens, squash, and pumpkins from Freshlink Farms in Penfield and East Hill Organic Farm in Middlesex.
The market will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, in Dandelion Square on the University's River Campus. In case of rain, the market will move to Hirst Lounge in Wilson Commons. All purchases must be cash only.
The mission behind the collaborative effort, organized by Engineers for a Sustainable World, Campus Dining Services, and Foodlink, is to raise awareness of the benefits in supporting local farmers and the pivotal role of universities in the movement towards more sustainable agricultural practices.
The event will include live music and information from campus and community groups, including UR Fair Trade Campaign, Grassroots, UR Students for Social Justice, Cornell Agricultural Extension, and The Institute for the Study of Ecological and Restorative Design.
