University of Rochester students' efforts to help the Gulf Coast hurricane victims were recognized with a new honor.
The University was awarded the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for Hurricane Relief Service, a new national recognition program designed to increase public awareness of the contributions that college students are making within their local communities and across the country through volunteer service.
"We have encouraged our students to engage in the world, in their local community, and beyond," says College Dean of Students Jody Asbury. "Their participation in hurricane relief efforts was extraordinary and we are proud that their efforts have been acknowledged in this way."
Honor Roll awardees are acknowledged for their service in response to the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes and their general community service efforts throughout their community and campus environment.
The 2006 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. More than 500 applications were received for the Honor Roll in its initial year.
