The Midnight Ramblers, an all-male a cappella group at the University of Rochester, are featured on the international a cappella compilation album titled Sing Three.
The Ramblers were one of 18 groups chosen from both professional and collegiate a cappella groups worldwide. They are one of only seven collegiate a cappella groups on the album and the only group from New York state. Other featured groups include the Tufts University Beelzebubs, The Duke University Pitchforks, and the University of North Carolina Hangers.
The Ramblers' performance of the song "Question!", originally recorded by alternative metal band System of a Down, was selected to close out the 18-track CD. Junior Joshua Hatcher is the soloist.
Sing Three was distributed by the Alliance for A Cappella Initiatives (AACI), a non-profit organization dedicated to showcasing the best in a cappella around the world. In order to be chosen for the CD, the Ramblers had to submit their tracks to a rigorous selection process.
In their live shows, according to group member and senior Jeffrey Le, the Ramblers' goal is provide a balance of musical and non-musical entertainment. The group's fall production, "The Horror Show," included film clips. "We try to push the limits on what a cappella can be," said Le. "We work on advancing a cappella by constantly trying new things. With that said, we always try to have fun."
Since forming in 1998, the Midnight Ramblers have produced six full-length albums and were included on the nationally acclaimed BOCA (Best of College A Cappella) 2001 CD. In 2005, the group placed third in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. In November, the Ramblers released their first DVD, Midnight Ramblers: the DVD.
The Ramblers will next be performing with the professional five-man a cappella ensemble Transit at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Strong Auditorium on the University's River Campus. Members then will travel to London for eight days in early March for their first international tour.
Sing 3, along with the Ramblers' DVD and other albums, can be ordered online at www.midnightramblers.org or found at the University of Rochester bookstore.
