Award-winning author and poet Percival Everett will read from his works at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus as part of The Plutzik Reading Series.
Everett was raised in Columbia, S.C., and attended the University of Miami and the University of Oregon, where he did graduate work in philosophy. He also has a master's degree of fine arts in writing from Brown University. His 15 novels, which include God's Country, Erasure, and Watershed, have received enormous critical acclaim. In addition, Everett is the author of three collections of short stories and, most recently, a book of poetry titled re:f (gesture).
With these varied works, Everett has moved among many genres, from a children's book titled The One That Got Away to works drawing upon Greek mythology with Zulus and For Her Dark Skin.
Everett is the recipient of many literary awards, including the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In addition, he has received the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the PEN/Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature, and a New American Writing Award. Everett has previously served as a judge for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. He currently teaches at the University of Southern California.
The Plutzik Reading Series is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious literary reading programs and readings are free and open to the public. Established to honor the work of Hyam Plutzik, a distinguished poet and Deane Professor of Poetry and Rhetoric at the University, it has featured more than 175 noted writers, including Pulitzer Prize winners Anthony Hecht, Elizabeth Bishop, and Galway Kinnell.
