ADMISSION: Free and open to the public
Freed is the author of Reading, Writing, and Leaving Home: Life on the Page (Harcourt, 2005), an acclaimed memoir that is also a meditation on the craft of writing. The recipient of the inaugural Katherine Ann Porter Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Freed is the author of such novels as Home Ground, The Mirror, and The Curse of the Appropriate Man. She will discuss her writing, including some works awaiting publication.
A native of South Africa, Freed received her master's and doctorate degrees in English literature from Columbia University. Over the course of her writing career, she has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and others. In addition, five of her books have appeared on The New York Times Notable Books of the Year list. Freed is currently a professor of English at the University of California at Davis.
This event is part of the continuing Neilly Series supported by the Andrew H. and Janet Dayton Neilly Endowment and the River Campus Libraries.
