Elizabeth Thompson, assistant professor of history at the University of Virginia, renowned for her expertise on the history of the Middle East, will speak about "Gender and Colonial Welfare in the Middle East" at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, in 201 Schlegel Hall on the University of Rochester River Campus.
Thompson is currently working on Engendering the Nation: Statebuilding, Imperialism and Women in Syria and Lebanon, 1920-1945, which discusses the gendered construction of a civic order in Syria and Lebanon during the years of French rule. She has also begun a comparative study of gender, statebuilding, and imperialism in the French possessions of the Levant, Tunisia, and Indochina. The study will focus on the gendered process of constructing political, social, and culture institutions from roughly the 1890s to the 1950s, with special attention paid to the media, particularly cinema.
Thompson joined the University of Virginia faculty in 1996, after receiving a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and her master's degree and doctorate from Columbia University. Her talk, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies and the Department of History.
