The Mt. Hope Family Center Child-Parent Psychotherapy program and University of Rochester undergraduate Lashonda Brenson were both awarded Greater Rochester Awards, which recognize efforts and achievements in community service.
The Mt. Hope Family Center Child-Parent Psychotherapy program was honored with the Impact Award. The Rochester Business Journal reported that the Center was chosen because it delivers \"measurable, positive results.\" The program focuses on enhancing the relationship between young children and their parents to prevent abuse and reduce placements in foster care. Now in its 15th year, the pscychotherapy program has served more than 700 families across all socio-economic levels. It has also reduced foster care rates among participating families to 2 percent, compared to the 20 percent rate among maltreating families without such services.
The Student Standout Award is given to students who \"exhibit a strong commitment to the local community through volunteer human service activities\" according to the RBJ. One of the three winners is University undergraduate Lashonda Brenson \'10. A graduate of East High School, Brenson is a mathematics and political science major who is involved in Black Students\' Union, which helps to organize campus visits for students in the Rochester schools so they can get a taste of University life.
The 2008 Greater Rochester Awards are presented by United Way of Greater Rochester and the Rochester Business Journal; seven categories recognize 16 individuals and one organization for achievements in the non-profit sector. The award recipients will be honored on October 28 during a luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Rochester.
