Center\'s Total Economic Impact Since 2001 Surpasses a Half-Billion Dollars
In another record-breaking year, the Center for Electronic Imaging Systems (CEIS) at the University of Rochester today announces it has made a $134.5 million economic impact in New York State in the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
According to the numbers CEIS has submitted, since 2001the center has delivered $680 million in economic impact in New York State in terms of new and retained jobs, revenues, cost savings, capital improvements, and acquired funds. The report is compiled from data provided by company officers who annually provide CEIS leadership with the results of collaborative projects.
\"The strength of our CEIS success is found in the dynamic interplay of our research investigators\' expertise and the technology needs of CEIS industry partners,\" says Gaurav Sharma, the new director of CEIS. \"It is my goal to continue to be a strong link between all CEIS scientists and business leaders.\"
CEIS works to strengthen the regional economy by matching researchers at the University of Rochester and other regional institutions with New York State and Rochester region businesses. Companies benefit from this cost-effective way to conduct cutting-edge research, which leads to new technologies and commercialization, and faculty members benefit by the additional funding to further their research and new ideas.
The center currently supports 30 projects throughout the region, including work on space-faring telescopes, medical devices, digital cameras, and remote sensing technology for applications such as remote-piloting military drones or guiding a probe on another planet.
CEIS is guided by the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB), which advises on long-term strategies to facilitate regional technology transfer. Members of the IAB include Robert Naum, chief technology officer of Applied Coatings; Zoran Ninkov, professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology; Ray Yingling, director of Kodak External Alliances; Al Johnson, senior analyst at Corning; and ITT Corporation CTO Bob Fiete.
