A record number of University of Rochester students have been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for fall 2009. Scholarship recipients are chosen through a competitive process and use the award to offset the cost of study abroad.
The ten recipients of this semester's awards are seniors Jennifer Marquart, Julia Munteanu, Shanis Navas, Christy Zheng, and juniors Amber Baig, Isthier Chaudhury, Jeffrey Conserette, Meaghan Dewaters, Eun Hea Kim, and Andrew Korn. They will study in countries including India, Egypt, Spain, and Japan, among others.
Since the program's inception in 2002, 37 University students have won Gilman awards. For its increased success rate, the University's program was included in the 2008 summer edition of the Gilman Advisor Newsletter and Jacqueline Levine, director of the Center for Study Abroad, was featured in the Advisor Spotlight for her efforts.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, the scholarship provides financial assistance to students who are enrolled in study abroad programs worldwide. The program gives undergraduates awards of up to $5,000 each.
