A shooter glass, a light bulb, a pearl earring, a police figurine, a pair of goggles, a plastic bag . . . What do they have in common? Not much. Are they art? That depends. Maybe it's all in how you look at it.
Throughout the fall semester, the students in the University of Rochester studio arts course "Visual Displays" have explored the shifting definitions of what constitutes an art "exhibition." This examination has led to a collective art display at the Art and Music Library gallery, room G-134, in Rush Rhees Library on the River Campus.
Each student selected 20 objects and created a personal collection. Size was the only constraint; each object had to fit in a five-inch-by eight-inch plastic zip lock bag. The students analyzed, categorized, grouped, represented, transformed, and displayed each of the 20 objects. This art exhibition seeks to challenge the viewer's perception of art: Is it the process, the idea, or the aesthetic?
The Art and Music Library is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. The display runs from Wednesday, Dec. 4, through Saturday, Jan. 5, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
Admission to the exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Art and Art History at (585) 275-9249.
