WHAT: Students interested in pursuing post-baccalaureate degrees can attend a day-long series of events on navigating the application process for graduate school. Presented by the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at the University of Rochester, \"Live the Dream – Successful Paths to a Graduate Degree\" is aimed at providing undergraduates with the tools needed to obtain a graduate degree. While the more than 70 students enrolled in Kearns Center programs are required to attend the sessions, the program is open to all undergraduate students. Online registration is available here.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, in Robert B. Goergen Hall on the University of Rochester\'s River Campus. Events of the day include:
Graduate Panel (3 to 5 p.m., Sloan Auditorium, Goergen Hall) – Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to hear from alumni of the Kearns Center\'s McNair program. The four panelists will discuss their experiences applying to graduate school and what life is like for a graduate student.
Reception (5 to 6 p.m., Munnerlyn Atrium, Goergen Hall) – Meet the panelists and network with other students during this open reception.
Keynote Address (6 to 7 p.m., Sloan Auditorium, Goergen Hall) – Donald Asher, an education columnist for MSN Encarta, will deliver a keynote address. The author of 10 books including Graduate Admissions Essays: Write Your Way into the Graduate Program of Your Choice, Asher will provide expertise on writing a strong personal statement and give tips on what qualities graduate schools look for in a candidate.
ABOUT THE KEARNS CENTER: Since its inception in 2002, the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity in Arts, Science, and Engineering has provided underrepresented students with academic and co-curricular support. The Kearns Center also houses the College\'s pipeline programs, assisting secondary school students through to doctoral candidates. Programs include Upward Bound college preparatory programs, the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program, and GEM graduate fellowships, among others.
